Jane’s Family and Personal Life
The relationship between Jane and Stephen Hawking
As we already stated that in 1962, Jane and Stephen met for the first time at a party through mutual college friends in 1962. Just one year later, Stephen was diagnosed with motor neurone disease known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Though both were aware of the diseases and his life expectancy and limitations, the lovely couple decided and engaged in 1964 and finally tied their knot in 1965 at the hometown of St Albans. In their happy married life, they welcomed their first child named Robert Hawking (born on 1967) who is a prominent software engineer and works for Microsoft. And later they had two children daughter Lucy Hawking (born on 1970) who is popular for her work as a journalist, educator and philanthropist and Timothy Hawking (born on 1979) who is a Brand Development Manager at the LEGO Group in London.
While talking about Timothy, though he is known for Stephen’s third child, there is some doubt about whether Stephen was Timothy’s biological father or not. After releasing the movie “The Theory of Everything”, people started to guess about Tim as the child of Jonathan Hellyer Jones, not from Stephen. However, Tim has the surname of Hawking and even DNA test can’t change their relationship as father and son. And Timothy always called Stephen as his father and loved him very much. And according to “The Guardian”, Jane also claimed that there is no doubt about Timothy is Stephen’s child.
Due to Stephen’s illness, Jane had to suffer from depression. In 2004, in her interview, she even cited her Christian faith for giving her hope in her marriage and the depression she faced as a result of being his then-caregiver. She also noted the irony in her faith-based strength to help him in light of Stephen Hawking’s well-known atheism. And After spending almost 3 decades together, the pair decided to get divorced. They started to get separated in 1990 and almost after five years they finally split up in 1995. After just one year of their separation, in 1996, Jane Hawking has stepped up her life and married to Musician Jonathan Hellyer Jones. However, Jane after her second marriage always supported her former late husband through his health problems. Like Jane, after five years, Stephen also went to marry Elaine Mason, his Nurse after split-up with Jane. And after his divorce with his second wife, Nurse Elaine Mason, during the Postlude to her 2007 memoir, Travelling to Infinity, she said that “We are able to associate freely again and enjoy many a family occasion together. It has been quite like old times.”
Married life with her present hubby, Jonathan Hellyer Jones
As we somehow call it with destiny or intention, Jane and Jonathan met from the suggestion of a friend. For taking a break and moving from the constant demands of caring for Hawking, her friend suggested taking a singing class in the local church choir. Interestingly, the local church choir was handled and run by Jonathan. Jonathan was a keen singer at that time. Jonathan became a part of their family, he shared the workload of caring for Stephen with Jane and helped to bring up the children. They slowly have known each other and finally tied in the relationship. After Jane divorced with Stephen, Jane and Jonathan eventually married in 1997.
In her interview, she said that “ I don’t think of my life as having two marriages, I think of it as a continuum, We all lived in such harmony, and for so long, until the divorce and the disruption.” She also added, “I’ve been able to lean on Jonathan- we can lean on one another, whereas in the past with Stephen, he was dependent on me all the time. He worked very hard and he was very successful, but I never felt I could lean on him emotionally or confide in him.”
